Hot Activities Cool Treats

Here is the artice I wrote for the Disney Junior Canada site!!

Summer is officially around the corner. With a three-year-old son and an eight-year-old daughter it’s easy to say we love summer! Here are a few favourite activities that keep my kids happily occupied in the sun.

Hot Activities!

Take a flat white bed sheet and hang it on your fence. Let the kids loose with paints, brushes, hands and feet and they will create an amazing summer mural. Once it is done you can use it to create a summer fort in the back yard for a healthy lunchtime picnic. It is easier to get kids to eat healthy food if they help prepare it and can eat it in a fort they created.

All kids love bubbles. We put a special twist on this summer activity by adding food colouring to the soap and water mixture. My three year old loves to create these colourful bubbles and chase them around the yard. Tape some paper to your fence and have the kids blow the coloured bubbles onto to the paper. This will create a great background for other art projects.

My son loves the new Disney Junior show Jake and the Never Land Pirates. This summer we are going to create a treasure chest for our backyard. Take a shoebox and have the kids decorate it in a pirate theme. Take the new treasure chest on a treasure hunt around the back yard or park and have the kids fill it will all the interesting things they find. While the kids are distracted hide it somewhere in the yard or house and make a treasure map for them to follow. After a few days dress the kids in pirate gear and they with have a fun adventure looking for their hidden loot.

Who doesn’t remember having a pet rock when they were a kid? Share this great retro craft with your kids this summer. Start with a walk through some local trails and let the kids pick up some rocks with interesting shapes. Once you are home they can paint the rocks as people and animals.

Cool Treats!

After playing hard in the sun the kids and I have a great cool summer treat idea to share with you. These frozen yogurt pops are easy to make and healthier than store bought Popsicles.

1 cup thawed frozen orange juice
1 1/2 cup yogurt
1 tsp agave nectar (or honey)
1/2 tsp vanilla (or other flavouring)

Mix ingredients pour into Popsicle molds and freeze

Safety First!

Participating in all of these fun outdoor activities means you should always keep sun safety at the top of your mind. A great idea is to keep a beach bag full of sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, first aid essentials, bottled water and portable snacks ready all the time. You can use this in your own yard as well as quickly grab it for those spontaneous summer adventures around town.
